Home-Start Cymru – Transforming Lives, One Family at a Time

At Home-Start Cymru, our mission is simple: to stand alongside potentially vulnerable children and families across Wales, offering them the support, guidance, and hope they need to thrive.

As an independent Welsh charity deeply rooted in local communities, we have been on the frontline, battling against the multiple and complex challenges faced by families for years.

The Need:

Recent statistics paint a stark reality. In Wales, 31% of children grapple with the devastating effects of poverty, a systemic issue that has persisted for generations. The recent upheavals, from the pandemic to the escalating cost-of-living crisis, have only intensified this struggle, pushing countless families to the brink of despair, requiring expensive and overstretched statutory services.  These hardships not only cast shadows over childhoods but also sow seeds of future adversity, with disadvantaged children four times more likely to battle mental health issues by age 11. The repercussions are dire, with child mortality rates soaring by 70% among the most deprived children in Wales.

In the face of such daunting challenges, the need for non-statutory, preventative, and early-intervention support has never been greater. However, our resources are stretched thin, with referrals surging by 25%in the past year alone.

We stand at a critical juncture, compelled to extend the reach, quality, and impact of our services to 40%more families across Wales.

Our Approach:

Central to our mission is a holistic, family-centred approach that addresses the range of needs of families. Through our home-visiting model, enhanced by more than 160 dedicated volunteers, we provide personalised, non-judgmental support directly within the sanctuary of families’ homes.

From mental health assistance to budget management, from crisis intervention to peer support, our comprehensive services cater to the diverse needs of families facing adversity. We believe in fostering resilience, promoting positive behaviours, and empowering parents to provide their children with the best possible start in life.

We’re embedded in local communities and committed to working as part of a multi-agency approach to addressing families’ unique needs.  Families are referred to us from a broad range of health, care, and education practitioners across Wales, who we then sign-post and coordinate access to a range of family support services, for a range of needs including mental health, behavioural, financial, or housing support (to name a few).  We also coordinate community-based family support connection, so that families can share information, experiences, and support.

The Impact:

As we reflect on the past year, we are immensely proud of the strides we’ve made, thanks in large part to the generosity of supporters like you. Together, we’ve supported over 1,200 families and 2,000 children, offering them a lifeline in their darkest times.

Looking ahead, we are committed to building upon this momentum, striving for transformational outcomes that touch every aspect of family life.  We aim to support families to achieve improvements in a range of long-term, positive outcomes, such as:

–  Parental wellbeing, equipping parents with the resilience to navigate the complexities of poverty.

– A reduction in parental stress, mitigating the risk of mental health crises.

– An enhancement in children’s mental health, nurturing happier, healthier childhoods.

– A improvement in children’s learning and development, paving the way for brighter futures.

– A boost in household budget management, easing the burden of the cost-of-living crisis.

As we stand on the threshold of a new chapter in our growth, reach and impact, we invite you to join us in our mission to transform lives, one family at a time. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families across Wales, offering them not just assistance, but hope, resilience, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.
