Who we are

Home-Start Cymru (HSC) is a Welsh charity who operates nationally throughout Wales, currently providing services to parents across Wales.

We believe that children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents play a key role in giving their children a good start in life – helping them to achieve their full potential.

Families invite us into their homes and lives so we can form relationships so that our peer volunteers and expert staff can offer non-judgemental, compassionate, confidential support. This enables parents to undertake a sustained journey of change that increases their own and their family’s well-being.

We work holistically with other community support partners in Wales, including health practitioners, and offer a range of parenting and family support services aimed at building stronger families and communities and creating an environment where children can thrive.

*Note – We are be able to offer services in certain areas of Wales, but it depends on funding at the time. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your location—while we might not be able to help right now, that could change across the year.

What we do

We understand that, sometimes, parents need the offer of nurturing support and guidance. A little help can make a world of difference, so our trained family charity volunteers will visit you in your own home across Wales for between two and three hours a week to offer an extra pair of hands or a listening ear.

And because everyone is different — and each family has their own unique, individual needs — we’ll work with you to find out what you need support with, and tailor our time with you to suit that. You can also be reassured that our time with you will remain confidential.

Home-Start Cymru is fully committed to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). We have a responsibility to reflect on the impact we have on the people that we support, our partners, our employees, and wider society.

In 2021, we have started with defining what equity, diversity and inclusion mean to us and developing a collective approach to guiding our journey to achieve our vision.  We established a co-production group made up of people with staff, volunteers, families and trustees with various experiences and asked them to contribute to the development of the strategy.

The strategy is the culmination of nearly two years of progress to establish goals that our charity will endeavour to exceed in the months and years ahead.

Our EDI strategy is for our entire Home-Start Cymru community and has been designed to be proactive, accessible and implementable across our organisation, from our central teams to our volunteers working with families, and how we interact with our partners up and down Wales and fulfil our important role in society.

We have drawn upon the real-life experiences of our colleagues, volunteers, supporters, external partners, and families to allow the organisation to broaden its mindset, embed a workplace culture that offers dignity and respect to all, encourage the sharing of ideas and perspectives, and values differences is of benefit to all employees.

It is to be used as guidance for staff, volunteers and trustees to develop the next steps for progress, solidify our collective long-term vision, and celebrate our strengths and our potential for collective growth.

The strategy is founded upon three key aims. Over the next four years we will seek to:

  • Increase our diversity
  • Increase our understanding and delivery of equitable practice
  • Actively address inequality faced by our service users, staff and volunteers
